VO: National Reptile Day Celebration

Thursday, October 21, 2021
5:00 pm8:00 pm

Hello everyone!

October is Nebraska is one of my favorite times of the year, the weather is cool, the leaves are changing, and it is Nebraska Reptile Month! That’s right, the whole month of October will be proclaimed, by the governor, as Nebraska Reptile Month! So, to celebrate this, the Nebraska Game and Parks Fish & Wildlife Education Division is hosting a celebratory event at Hardin Hall (UNL East Campus) on Thursday October 21 from 5:00-8:30pm. What makes this even more special is that National Reptile Awareness Day is October 21, hence, why we are hosting this event this night.

So, this all being said, I am asking our community partners (all of you) in the Eastern Nebraska area if they would be willing to come out and assist with this event? My idea is that organizations would display and set up a booth with either an activity, live animals, information, etc. all about reptiles/the environment, benefits of reptiles, etc., to bring awareness of reptiles to the citizens of Nebraska. I am also asking Dennis Ferraro to have a Snakes of Nebraska display in Hardin Hall as well. The goal is that families will come to Hardin Hall and visit different booths and then around 7pm or so there will be a keynote program about native Nebraska reptiles in the auditorium section of Hardin Hall. If anyone was around to assist with Naturepalooza back in 2015/2016 this will be a very similar event, but focusing strictly on native Nebraska reptiles.

At this event we will also be displaying the 2021 Nebraska Reptile Month K-12 Art Contest submissions. This will be the second year that Game and Parks has hosted this event, however, we thought we would make it even bigger by doing a large scale event, as well as the art contest. Winners will be recognized at this event as well.

This is a FREE event that will be hosted by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the School of Natural Resources. There will also be FREE event parking for volunteers as well as public attending the event.

If this is something that your organization would be interested in please fill out this google doc form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd1lqqtJPIUG_w-JKRWL2CRpIEl5K7W7XQdtj8dCh8TBbfaQg/viewform?usp=sf_link no later than Friday September 10th. Also, please feel free to share this email with a natural resource partner I may have missed, or you think would be a good addition to this group.

Nebraska Game and Parks will also be monitoring the COVID-19 situation as well, making sure that everyone is in a safe and clean environment.

Thank you all for your consideration, I know the fall is an extremely busy time for all of us, so thank you for taking the time to read this email! Please feel free to reach out with any concerns, and or questions.
