VO: River City Chapter W/ Omaha Permaculture

Saturday, May 6, 2023
9:00 am11:00 am
2709 Fort Street Omaha, NE

First, A little bit about Omaha Permaculture if you are not familiar with them. This is their story from their web page:

The vision for Omaha Permaculture (OP) first formed in 2013, when founder Gus von Roenn joined with the City of Omaha Planning Department to help fashion a Seasonal Gardening Agreement for city-owned vacant land in low income communities. Gus saw a unique need for sustainable land management that reduced mowing maintenance, absorbed more storm water, reduced dumping, provided edible landscapes for people and wildlife, replanted forests, and built picnic tables for the community to enjoy on Omaha’s most forgotten and blighted properties.

In December of 2015, Omaha Permaculture was established as a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization to meet that need. Between March 1st and October 31st, OP began working on 9 city-owned lots with ambitious plans of creating edible landscapes throughout North Omaha. OP now manages 17 properties, runs a robust portfolio of programs, and maintains partnerships with the City Planning Department, Omaha Municipal Land Bank, Habitat for Humanity, and other community collaborators.
So, with their mission in mind, our volunteer plan for May 6 is:

Omaha Permaculture manages a property at 2709 Fort Street that they have converted to a community garden (we're calling it the "OUR Garden" project). They are planning to have us transfer soil into the 8 garden beds and then do some planting of their starts! They will have gloves, hand trowels, and other necessary tools, but volunteers are very welcome to bring their own gloves and trowels (and, of course, should plan to bring water, sun protection, etc.). There is also a picnic table onsite, if people want to bring snacks to share.

We plan to meet directly at the Fort Street property from 9:00-11:00 on the 6th.

In order for us to have some idea how many volunteers will show up, please let me know by Thursday, May 4th if you can help! Looks like the weather will be good for some outdoor activity and its only 2 hours.
